Sign Up - Carbon Offset Eligibility

We're committed to helping small-scale clean energy producers earn money through carbon offset credits.

Our project pool, "Helios", is now accepting applications.

We use a simple, two-step process:

1. We need to first check your carbon offset eligibility.

Simply fill out the form below and we will confirm your eligibility. (Note that some grants may make you ineligible - you can check our blog post about this here or, if you're not sure, just fill our the form below and we'll let you know!)

2. If you are eligible, sign a contract with us.

If you are eligible, we will send you an estimate of how much money your system could return to you, together with a link to securely sign up to Solar Offset using DocuSign.  Easy!

*Please check your junk/spam folder if you do not receive an email from info@solaroffset.ca.*

Am I Eligible for Carbon Offset Credits?

Find out if you're eligible for carbon offset below.

We're committed to helping small-scale clean energy producers earn money through carbon offset credits. But before we can help, you need to find out about your carbon offset eligibility.

Are You Eligible for Carbon Offset?

To be eligible for SOLAR OFFSET, you need to fulfill the government regulations. You must be the owner of:

  • A small-scale solar photovoltaic (solar PV, or solar electricity) system, or

  • A small-scale wind power system.

You can be a homeowner, farmer, business, school board, or municipality.  You just need to own a system that:

  • Is located in Alberta

  • Is connected to the Alberta electricity grid

  • Is over 5 kW and under 5 MW in size

  • Started generating after Jan 2, 2012.

Please be aware that some grants and incentives prevent you from creating carbon offset credits, meaning you can't participate in Solar Offset. However, others allow you to claim both the grant and carbon offset credits.  See our post about this here.

Complete our no-obligation sign-up to confirm your eligibility and receive updates on the SOLAR OFFSET program.

How Do I Sign Up?

We're asking solar and wind power producers to sign up before SOLAR OFFSET launches our first project later in 2022. All you need to do is fill out the form below with all the relevant details.

Signing up is not an obligation to take part in SOLAR OFFSET. Rather, we'll keep you up-to-date with all the project developments—you're free to opt out at any time you choose.

Confirm Your Carbon Offset Eligibility and Receive and Estimate

We're getting ready to launch. SOLAR OFFSET will be launching our first project later in 2022.  To confirm your eligibility and receive an estimate of how much money your system could earn you or your business, fill out the sign-up form below, and we will send you an estimate.

You will receive an email from info@solaroffset.ca.  (Please check your junk/spam folder if you do not receive an email.)

Don't have a system installed yet?  You can still use the sign-up form to add yourself to our mailing list and stay up-to-date with the project.

This is a no-obligation sign-up, and it does not commit you to participate in SOLAR OFFSET. Your information will not be shared with anyone.  As we approach our project launch, we will be in touch to let you know how you can participate and start receiving money for the emission reductions your system is making.

Please try out our carbon credits calculator for further information about how much money you can make.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question about SOLAR OFFSET, carbon offset credits, or more? Take a look at our frequently asked questions below!

What is SOLAR OFFSET?

SOLAR OFFSET is an Alberta-based company working to reduce the complexity of the carbon offset credit system. Because all carbon offset credits must be rigorously documented, many small-scale producers are priced out of the market.

We're here to change that.

By pooling the energy production of small-scale clean energy producers across Alberta, we can reduce the complexity and pay producers for their clean energy generation. We handle the hassle; you generate the energy. It's that simple.

See the About Us section for further information about SOLAR OFFSET.

How do I get paid?

Because Albertan regulations necessitate certain industrial facilities to reduce CO2 emissions (or other greenhouse gases), there's a booming industry of carbon offset credits. Carbon offset credits are created through either renewable energy generation or carbon storage/sequestration. We sell these carbon credits to facilities and pass some of the earnings on to you.

It's a simple yet effective way to lower net emissions – and earn money while doing so.

What is a carbon offset credit?

A carbon offset credit is created whenever carbon dioxide is prevented from being emitted into the atmosphere. It's equivalent to one tonne of CO2 emitted. For example, a solar panel farm that replaces a power station is equivalent to the CO2 that would have been released over the lifetime of the solar farm.

If sold to a business, the carbon offset credit is a right for that business to emit one tonne of CO2. In this way, businesses can offset their carbon dioxide emissions, resulting in a net lowering in atmospheric CO2.

The carbon offset credits are sold on the market, and their price is determined by a Federally set ceiling as well as market supply and demand.

How determines carbon offset eligibility?

Because carbon offsetting is heavily regulated by the government, they determine who is and isn't eligible for carbon offsetting. In Alberta, the credits system is governed by the Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) Regulation.

Under this regulation, all verified participants are quantified using Alberta-approved methodologies called quantification protocols. They're also verified by a third party in accordance with the Standard for Validation, Verification, and Audit.

Please refer to the Alberta Emission Offset System section of the government website for further information.

Why not sell them yourself?

If your carbon offset eligibility is acceptable, you might be wondering: can't I just sell my energy myself? It's a good question – and it explains why SOLAR OFFSET was created.

Because of the rigorous – and necessary – requirements the Alberta government has for each energy producer, it's often not cost-effective for small-scale producers to create carbon offset credits. It's possible, just not practical.

We wanted to find a solution: it's SOLAR OFFSET.

You won't have to deal with any of the complex government paperwork. We handle creating and selling the carbon offset credits – so you don't have to worry about anything.

It's a simple, effective, and community-based system for all Albertans eligible for carbon offset.
